    About Vince

Written on January 8th, 2006 by Vince Chan ::

My name is Vince Chan and I’m the person behind AmBlogger. You can read more about my blogging history prior to AmBlogger on the About AmBlogger post. Here, allow me to reveal little bit about who I am.

As of this post’s writing, I’m a 27 year old Canadian living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The GTA has many wonderful bloggers that you should really check out! I am currently single and living at the edge of the suburban part of the city in Scarborough.

I was originally born in Singapore and grew up there until my family immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1990. Growing up with a Chinese heritage in the east and west has allowed me to bear different perspectives on a variety of subjects. I’ve also enjoyed being involved in creative projects am an a self-admitted media junkie. Growing up in a foreign land, it always felt like movies, music, television, the internet were my extended family.

I went to the University of Waterloo and majored in Computer Science with elective courses on electrical engineering. Never one to back down from challenge, I actually did better as the senior years rolled along. For anyone who knows about the UW curriculum, they would consider my senior-year courses of Real-Time Operating Systems, Computer Graphics, Compiler Construction, and Distributed Systems to be a tough challenge. Yet, it turned out to be my best year for grades and I graduated with honors.

Academically I found computers and technology to be stimulating but what I enjoyed more is self-discovery, self-improvement, dicussions and debates. I often tell my friends that if I were able to do it all over again, I probably would have majored in philosophy; at least I can think deep thoughts about unemployment!

I’ve worked several jobs as an intern in the programming industry and also a full-time position after I graduated. Disillusioned with the thought of being a programmer for the long-term. I bravely left the industry behind and have since found a welcoming calling in the financial industry.

I still enjoy technology and media very much, as a hobby. I’ve been blogging through several sites since August 2004. The Web 2.0 revolution is certainly captivating my interest at the moment. Blogging has been a wonderful self-evolution as I discover how to express my inner thoughts.

Hopefully, this will get you started with some information about me! I’m sure many people will draw their own conclusions based on my writing and other interaction with me.

Anyways, I saw that you did Eletrical Engineering and some courses in Computer Science in College. I am entering college this year, and wanting to know, which course you found more beneficial to you now? The Eletrical Engineering or Computer Science and why?
      thanks man

You’re cuter than Darren, so I’ll forgive you for copying his site. ;-)

Still, let your own design style show through in the future, rather than simply copying.

      Good luck!

rory, I’ve gone on the record many times saying that “it’s not WHAT you’ve learn in University/College, it’s HOW you’ve learn it”. You can take any subject, any major and turn around and be successful with it.

I don’t believe that paper will be worth/matter anything to you once you get it, only to the people whom you’re trying to show. The question will be what will truly matter to you after you graduate?

EE and CS are both good subjects, I did not find one superior to the other, although many engineers will disagree with me on that!
