Is It Appropriate To Blog At Work?
First, a tangent! My apologies to those who find the non-capitalization a distraction! I do too! The problem with rushing to substitute an adequate theme is that you don’t know what that theme will do. The theme on this site currently is Zen-Minimalist and it makes every letter lower-case. I wonder what the looks were on the commenters who typed their comment only to see that they themselves did not capitalize! I’m looking to modify I’ve modified and will look to evolve or use a new theme in the future. (Beware! just kidding!)
Without the need to keep beating a dead dog, I believe my future actions will speak louder than written words in the Blogosphere! Those who have judged will keep judging and will be judged as well. The comments remain as is for all to see. Some people suggested privately that I start moderating these comments. There’s no point. AmBlogger strives to remain open for all willing to discover more about blogging for passion, rather than blogging for profit.
So I’m going to write about actions? No… I’ll be talking about inaction. Specifically, my experience with this avalanche of comments. I woke up early in the morning, made one final comment and was going to be unavailable for the whole day. Believe me, it was too tempting to peek at this site while I had proper work to be done. And that’s a problem!
Many amateur bloggers do not have the luxury of a flexible time schedule. Most week days, we are busy doing many work, and some of these work demand that we do not abuse the time paid for our services. Have you ever found a conflict of interest between work and Blogging?
Admittedly, Blogging can be an addiction for many starting at this craft. Do you blog at work? Do you think it’s appropriate to do so? I know where I stand on this case, even if I were on a break, on a lunch, wouldn’t it be an abuse on a company’s resource to check in on your Blog? Sure, it sounds alright! But what if it were your employees? Ok, you are a cool boss, but what if they do it excessively? Conflict of interests? Possible Espionage? So many things are possible.
Do you have a story about Blogging at work? Ever been warned or encouraged to Blog? What are you thoughts about abusing company resources? Weigh in your comments about when inaction is preferably over action!

hehe, I used to take tech support calls for a few different computer companys, I was on a computer at least 8 hrs a day, sometimes 12. I had a few sites up at the time, and I would work on them from work, post in forums, etc. Majority of the time (not going to lie) it wasn’t a problem trying to juggle the two (walking people thru stuff on the phone and working on my sites). Now that I work for myself, it’s a little harder, b/c I have even more to do…..
Vince,
I am so disappointed…
You start out by um… borrowing? (stealing) Probloggers design.
You get the bowels of all the anal retentive bloggers in an uproar, and they post 100’s or or 1000’s of comments here and on a whole bunch of other blogs…. Then you come back with… blog at work?
You gotta be kidding.
You need to do something to top the Problogger ruckus,
and this blog at work isn’t anywhere near the ballpark.
What’s next, a scathing post about who drinks milk when they blog?
Come on man.
I was counting on you.
Don’t let me down.
You can do it!!!
Brent,
Sorry if you expected something more controversial this time around. I stand firm despite howling winds that say this is a publicity stunt. Sure, there’s a spike of traffic, great right? I wouldn’t care if half or more of these visitors don’t stay. The ad revenue it supposedly generated, blah! Who cares?
If they don’t care about Amateurs in Blogging, there’s no point in keeping them around with posts that distract from the Blog’s mission!
If they do care about blogging for passion they will eventually find out what this Blog is trying to offer. No mob will compromise AmBlogger’s mission to help discover AmBloggers and AmBlogging issues.
Trust me, AmBlogger is unlike any of those Blog for Profit sites simply because it’s NOT!
Brent, would you have an interest in doing something worthwhile?
ok vince,
I added you to my bloglines feed does that count as worthwhile?
if not then give me a hint?
let me know if you ever want to post here about this subject! I have no wish to monopolize the forum, the final vision of AmBlogger will be to return it back to the AmBloggers! (Don’t know how long that will take!)
I’ve posted before, but only when waiting for a server to load or someother downtime period. I like to keep busy and if work ain’t doing it (and I have to wait where I am and can’t go off and do something else) then I will turn to the internet or reading a programming book.
Thanks for writing this post. This morning I woke wanting to blog about whether people blog at work or not, and lo and behold I Googled (or Yahooed) and found your post and linked to it:
Happy Blogging…not at work, that is, I guess…
